If you love fun and easy craft ideas, this list of painted flower pot ideas is for you!
I’ve reached out to some top DIY and craft bloggers to find the best ideas for painting flower pots.
First, let’s talk about some questions that are often asked about painting flower pots.
Can Clay Pots Be Painted?
Absolutely!
Clay terra cotta pots are perfect for painting.
You can easily find clay pots at Michaels, Hobby Lobby, Joanns, or online.
What Kind of Paint Do You Use on Flower Pots?
In short, I would recommend acrylic paints for painting flower pots.
More specifically, if these flower pots are going to be displayed outdoors, you will want high quality, outdoor acrylic paints that are mostly water resistant and fade resistant.
Be forewarned, though, that even so-called waterproof paints usually do not protect 100% from water damage.
Paint pens are another easy option for painting flower pots. They are durable, inexpensive and virtually mess-free, making it a great option for not just flower pots, but painted rocks, as well.
Do You Need to Seal Acrylic Paint on Terra Cotta Pots?
This step is optional, but I do recommend a simple acrylic sealer to help your pots last as long as possible.
An acrylic sealer spray can provide a protective, clear finish, which is especially useful if you’re planning on using your painted pots outdoors.
Is Acrylic Paint Waterproof?
Although most acrylic paints might be slightly water-resistant, they usually do not provide complete waterproofing.
Yes, this also goes for so-called “waterproof” acrylic paints! You just can’t guarantee absolutely no water damage.
Since acrylic paints are only marginally water-resistant and most likely not waterproof, water can definitely have an effect on your pieces.
I’d recommend sealing your pieces, and if it’s a piece you want to last forever, consider displaying it indoors.
Can You Use Mod Podge to Seal Acrylic Paint?
This is another great question about sealing painted flower pots and the answer is YES!
Mod Podge makes a great sealer, and provides a clear, durable finish.
You can choose from numerous finishes, including gloss, matte, glitter and more.
Mod Podge does have an outdoor formula which is water-resistant, but not completely waterproof.
I’ll say it again, if you are painting a piece you want to last forever, you will want to display it indoors.
