Are you curious about macrame?
Today, learn all about this crafting technique and add another hobby to your hobbies list!
Before we get into the projects, though, let’s talk about what macrame is and what you need to start.
What is Macrame?
Macrame is a form of crafting that uses knots to create various projects.
Macrame is a DIY craft that’s been around for years (it’s hard to trace the exact origins), but is now becoming popular again.
And with this surge in popularity comes an update in styles and designs of macrame.
When I think of traditional macrame, I think of outdated wall hangings or covers for hanging plants from the 60s, but macrame has gotten an update and a lot of macrame crafts now have a modern, trendy twist!
I’m so glad it’s making a comeback and you should be, too. Macrame is easy, uses minimal supplies, and can be done indoors (making it the perfect winter craft)!
Where Did Macrame Originate?
While the exact origins of macrame are not entirely known, it’s believed that macrame can be attributed to Arabic weavers during the 13th century or so.
It’s believed that this textile craft then slowly spread throughout Europe (and then beyond).
Interestingly, it’s believed that macrame became popular due in part to sailors!
Not only was knot-tying a practical skill to have aboard a ship, but macrame also became a way to keep sailors busy and engaged during long trips.
Apparently, while at port, they would also sell or barter their knotted wares!
So if you’re ready to try your hand at one of the most versatile DIY crafts, start here…
What Supplies Do I Need for Macrame?
If you’re a macrame beginner, one idea is to buy a macrame kit from a seller on Etsy.
Often, you will get everything you need in the kit, so you aren’t buying supplies you may not need.
There are kits for wall hangings, hanging planters, coasters and so much more!
If you decide to purchase your own, here are some of the supplies you may need, depending on your project:
- macrame board (this is the surface that will hold your work)
- macrame cord
- mounting rings
- cotton twine
- beads (optional)
Again, you’ll want to look at each project to see what specific supplies you may need.
