Conserving water is becoming more and more important! Today, we’ll talk about ways to conserve water at home, at school, and outdoors.
Water conservation is currently a hot topic, and for good reason.
As our population grows, demands on the water supply continue to increase. More people equals more water usage.

Fortunately, it is easy to conserve water. Yes, really!
In this post, I’m sharing why we should conserve water, 10 ways to conserve water, and much more.
Let’s get started…
Why We Should Conserve Water?
Conserving water is helpful to both your wallet and the environment.
Practicing water conservation techniques saves you money, as you are using less of this precious resource.
Secondly, water conservation diverts less water from our rivers, etc., which helps keep the environment healthy.
Also, conserving water can lessen water and wastewater treatment costs, as well as the amount of energy used to treat and pump water. This lowers energy demands, and also helps lessen air pollution. Win, win!
10 Ways to Conserve Water
There are many ways to start conserving water. Here are the top 10:
Check for leaks. Check any and all of your appliances and equipment that use water for leaks. Leaks are particularly common in toilets, faucets and outdoor sprinkler systems. A leaky toilet, for example, can waste 200 gallons per day.
Replace old toilets. Flushing toilets is one of the major causes of water usage inside the home. Older toilets usually use more water than newer models.
Replace old washing machines. Washing machines are another appliance that uses a lot of water. As with toilets, older models tend to use more water than newer ones.
While we are on the subject of washing machines: Be sure to use the appropriate water level and load size on your washing machine (versus just always using the “large” load setting).
Be mindful when planting plants. Make sure that the plants you choose are appropriate for your environment. Consider plants and landscaping designed to create an aesthetically pleasing landscape by using lower-water and drought-resistant plants, grasses and shrubs.
Don’t let the water run while brushing your teeth or washing your face. This is one of the easiest ways to conserve water. Turn off the faucet while doing things such as brushing your teeth and washing your face.
Take shorter showers and avoid baths. Baths tend to use more water than short showers. If you must take a bath, try to fill your tub only halfway.
Fill an empty jug and keep drinking water in the refrigerator instead of letting the faucet run until cold.
Wash your car with water from a bucket, instead of a hose. Alternatively, consider using a commercial car wash that recycles water.
Use mulch around shrubs and plants to reduce evaporation of water from the soil. This also cuts down on weed growth.
Ways to Conserve Water at Home
There are so many ways to conserve water at home each day!
Here are some top water conservation tips at home:
Use the refrigerator to defrost food instead of water.
Use the appropriate load size on your washing machine (instead of always using the “large” load setting).
Scrape waste food into the trash instead of rinsing your dishes.
Don’t let water run while washing your face, brushing your teeth or doing other bathroom tasks.
Take shorter showers. Avoid baths.

Consider replacing older toilets and washing machines.
Check for leaks in appliances that use water in your home.
Ways to Conserve Water at School
Conserving water at school can be a bit trickier, but there are ways you can help!
Don’t use the toilet as a wastebasket.
Carry and use a refillable water bottle.
Turn off water while soaping up your hands.
If you see a leak at school, report it!
Ways to Conserve Water Outdoors
There are many ways to save water outdoors. Here are some of our top ideas.
Only water your lawn when it is needed. This can save you so much wasted water (and cut down on your water bill, too).
When you DO water, make sure you aren’t wasting water to water your driveway, sidewalks, street, or other hard surfaces.
Make sure you have a thick layer of mulch around trees and plants. This will help slow the evaporation of water, making you need to water less often.
